Enjoying singing together

Everybody sings! Whether it's in the bath, in the car or working round the house or the garden.

It's sheer pleasure…. but facing an audience, alone or in a group, is something else….. …
The voice is perhaps such an intimate part of oneself that letting others hear it is like revealing too much.

May be there is a fear of showing a lack of musical skills ?
And yet, the voice is the basic instrument. You can take it with you everywhere. It's always there, ready to come out and say it all without intermediary.

Yet, one can sing without any musical knowledge, Music can be learnt while singing…

And what about sharing that enjoyment by singing in a group or in a choir, where all the voices blend and become an organised and structured sound mass ?

A choir's business…..

A choir is not just 20, 30 or 40 voices side by side but a well-knit togetherness where each register plays its part. Following the intention of the composer and the directives of the conductor, they listen and respond to each other. Music, breathing, emotion , enjoyment and sometimes nerves, are shared by all. This delicate alchemy often turns a concert into an unforgetable event.

Singing in a group doesn't limit itself to singing during rehearsals, amongst yourselves ; it is also, presenting, giving and sharing one's work and pleasure with an audience of music lovers, amateurs or simply curious listeners. From 'a capella' to 'grand orchestra' concerts, each event is one of emotion shared by all and a source of pleasure and development.

Working together and performing binds the singers and brings cohesion and dynamic to the group. But it all rests upon the commitment of each member and their adhesion to the choir objectives, giving a little of themselves to contribute to the realisation of the musical work in hand.
Indeed, singing irequires effort but it is also a way of relaxing. At the end of a rehearsal, it is physically noticeable that stress and tensions have disappeared. Is it a question of harmony ? Musical harmony, undoubtedly! But particularly, harmony of the body through breathing. Indeed, singing is breathing, but not anyhow……… it is practised on a long term basis throughout rehearsals. It is the ABC of all singers.

One for all and all for one…..

Each resgister has a vital and irreplaceable role to play under the direction of the conductor. His job is to put some order into what may seem to the novice like a complicated maze or even chaos. He is the one who brings together, organises and conducts the choir into expressing the music to its best. There must be great trust between conductor and singers so that the choir can fully express itself.

Anyway, that is to say that singing in a choir is a great adventure. It is an open opportunity to learn new things, to meet people, to exchange, to gather skills and effort, for and via MUSIC.

Welcome to CHORUS SEMPER VIRET !

But what is a chorister ?
A chorister is a particular specie of singer, of gregarious nature, itself divided into two sub-species : men and women, themselves further divided according to characteristics.

Men first ! Who knows why but men are more reluctant to sing in a choir. Yet, tenors, barytones and bass are vital to the harmony of the choir. Who can say they have never been moved by the sound of male voices so present in many musical works.
Men, don't hesitate to join a choir. You will be welcomed with open arms.

Women find it easier to share their enjoyment in singing and many join choirs with the soprani reaching the high notes that carry the melody whilst the alti support and delicately enhance it, setting the mood.
